Do you know the inspiration that can come when walking into a plant shop in May? You’ll find an enormous variety of plant babies and -children, of scents, shapes, and sizes all waiting for a new home. Some are edible, some not, some are blooming, others not. What a tricky, tempting sight when you know there is a place at home that would just be perfect for them.
I walked home with two bags full of different little ones. Many of them were lettuces. It took a day or two and they were in the ground. From that time, I was checking on them more than I’d liked to. They were doing very well!
Yesterday morning I walked out in the very early morning. A huge rain cloud had passed. When I came into the veggie garden even the air felt green. The first sun rays reached over the old barn and a few birds had just woken up trying on some morning songs.
Everything felt clean and clear in the peace of this freshly washed morning atmosphere. But walking by my lettuce babies I couldn’t believe what I saw: 2 plants were nearly gone others had lost whole leaves and the heavy rain had seasoned everything with black sand.
Who ate my plants???
After an hour of crawling my fingers through green beds and lush bushes, I had collected over a hundred slimy snail thieves. This disaster changed the start of my day and ended in a beautiful walk between fresh fields. When I reached the forest, my prisoners were released at a little pond surrounded by an abundance of natural green.
These remind me of the mountains in Hawaii. Lovely.
