Do you remember how it was back then? Do you remember the colors and shapes, the fresh mornings, the magic of snowflakes, lakesides, and the beach? Still, I love relating to some of these from the little child-me deep inside.
I’ve always been curious, adventurous, and afraid. I mostly stayed limited in range to the area, where I lived in northern Germany. Maybe that’s why I’ve always had wild ideas like traveling to faraway places.
‘Far away’ at first was two blocks to the west. Then it was joining my mom’s walks to the farmers market downtown. At some point, it was the big city, 30 train minutes to the south of us.
But then the moment my grandfather showed me his old paper globe my mind stopped. My eyes must have been wide open. I was mesmerized! Was it even possible that there was so much more?!? Could it be true that we just lived in this tiny spot on the upper side of that big, slightly tilted ball?
I tried to place my small index finger where my grandfather’s house was, but it covered nearly half of our country. Maybe that was the moment when my dream of traveling the world was born.
What were your childhood dreams? Do you remember how they began?
